Mara North Conservancy is Maasai land. More than 800 landowning families lease it to twelve camps, which is what keeps the bed count low and the wildlife corridors open.
What the fee pays for
A conservancy is a commercial arrangement, and that is the point.
The conservancy fee of US$130 per adult per night is charged separately from the room rate and goes to the conservancy rather than the lodge. It is the mechanism that makes leaving the land undeveloped worth more to a Maasai family than farming or fencing it.
Camps in Mara North operate under the conservancy’s environmental rules as a condition of the lease — solar power, eco-friendly waste handling, and a cap on beds across 70,000 acres. Royal Mara runs on a solar supply that keeps electricity on 24 hours a day.
The gift shop

We support local Maasai women by selling their hand-made beaded work in the lodge gift shop. Each piece carries the story of a family, and the income goes to them directly.
